John-Angus met me at the door and welcomed me in from the cold, leading me through the twisting halls to meet the rest of the guys, all of whom where the most welcoming and friendly of people. I really felt at home in their rehearsal room, which seemed to reflect the personalities of the very band who inhabited it with warmth and soul.

The guys said they were delighted for having the chance to be a part of the Voice Project community and wanted to pass on the good vibes with a cover of Dave “Rave” DesRoches’ “All of the Love.” To the tune of John-Angus and Colin’s acoustic guitars, Jack’s plugged-in bass, and Sean’s hand drum, I felt lucky to witness such a beautiful, soulful cover. When it comes to spreading kindness and support across the world, a song like “All of the Love” really hits home. — Phil

He introduced me to the rest of the guys who welcomed me in like a brother. Once we were all settled in, Scott shared how he chose the song by The Trews, “Lord Keep Me In Mind,” and how he wanted to bring their friends into the loop. The song started with some beautiful 3-part harmony, a cappella, then quickly came in with an acoustic and suitcase as a drum followed by two ukuleles. Scott’s vocals carried so much soul and power in power in them, I think that comes through well in the video. The song was so good, and they made it so very much their own that I forgot it was a cover. And something else really special, Scott came up to me afterwards and made sure he shared his heart and love for Voice Project off camera. It was just something he wanted to express privately. And I think that’s the heart of this group, a genuineness that’s truly endearing, that commands a certain respect…it’s the vibe I was feeling the whole time I was with them, but that was a really special moment. And for all of us who work on projects like this, little moments like that last us a long time. — Francisco

So then it turns out we’ve got him for an episode, and since our policy is not to influence the cover choice, I was just sort of hoping to myself. Freedy asked me to meet him over in Greenpoint at his friends loft – which was an amazing place, a huge space filled with all kinds of interesting things, bits and bobs. Freedy had on a cool hat, a “Freedy Fedora,” actually named after him by Goorin Brothers milliners. I guess that’s the kind of cool thing that can happen if you put out great records for over 25 years. In 1994 RollingStone’s annual critic’s poll named Freedy as Best Songwriter that year (Kurt Cobain placed 2nd), and “Bad Reputation” still takes me to very specific times and places in my life. Freedy said that he’d like to cover his friend Paul Westerberg from the Replacements, that this song had inspired him and was one of his favorite tracks. I was smiling on the inside, on the outside too I think. — Anna

The singer, Jocie Adams, had already done a session with us as part of The Low Anthem, which is one of my favorite videos so it was nice to film her again in a new band with a new sound. (Btw, I love seeing her described online as a “singer, multi-instrumentalist and former NASA technician.”) I am personally a big fan of Fiona Apple and I thought this was a great treatment of “Every Single Night.” When first hearing the band run through the song I was thinking to myself how wonderful it will be to hear the sound of those birds chirping in the background, and then I realized the second time around that Nora was making these sounds herself! Thank you to Zach, Max, Raymond, Nora, Michael, Charles and Jocie.

It hadn’t dawned on me that Sean and Sara were brother and sister until they introduced themselves, but as soon as they started playing it was clear that they had obviously been playing together for a long time. There is such a unique feeling you get with bands that are made up of family members and have been playing together all their lives. Besides having similar styles, there is a timing and harmony that is like no other. We’ve focused a lot in this project on family bonds and especially the relationship of mother and child, but this was a really inspired song choice as it speaks to that special relationship between father and son, Glenn having written this about losing his own father and both the difficulty and the peace that came with that.

I really enjoyed shooting this episode and both Sara and Sean were lovely people that invited me to see them play that night at Largo. I was actually already heading to that same show to see another friend and hadn’t realized that The Watkins family was also playing. It was a great night and I was blown away by Sara and Sean Watkins. I recommend you go out and see them live if they are ever in your area. — Anna

As the third of ten children Marie has played with her family since childhood, and she chose to cover Sara Watkins who also comes from a musical family and plays with her brother. Marie was talking about some of the good parts of sharing the road with siblings. There is such a wonderful connection when musicians play with members of their family and you can really feel how in sync they are, I think it’s something special that families that play together share and a sensibility that those artists take out into the world and into their collaborations with other artists. On the subject of music and families, I was just watching that amazing Baby’s Emotional Reaction to Mother’s Song video that’s been going around the internet the last few days, and thinking in turn, as my thoughts often turn here, to the times in Africa we’ve heard mothers singing for the return of their children. I think it’s one of the most moving things, the most moving acts of expression I’ve ever heard or ever will hear, and I suppose that it should be no surprise that it occurs when something as powerful as that kind of love and bond is combined with what I often think of as our most powerful means to express our deepest feelings.

Thanks to Marie for inviting us in and for this beautiful for take on Sara’s “When It Pleases You.” I so love doing these intimate, personal recordings, in a personal spaces with no airs or contrivance, just a room the where one lays ones head, and an artist like Marie really shines in this format. No special effects, just talent and genuine heart. This is music as I enjoy it, that moves me.

It took a few minutes to find the switch to the overhead fans that were making a terrible screeching sound but we did and soon enough were underway with this beautiful cover of “St Andrews.” It’s fun for us when someone chooses to cover an artist that’s already done a session and to find out why they chose that person…in this case it was the Canadian connection, getting back to that sense of community we started all this with. Like we used to say often, anyone can cover a classic, but there is that special sort of nod one gives to a contemporary in covering their song, a feeling of kinship, and made even more special when the artists speak across different styles so that the song really can take a new breath as with this version. Thanks to Chris, the good folk at The Living Room, and our long time supporters and friends at Bedouin Soundclash. — Anna

I know for me it can happen for a number of different reasons, but my favorite is when it’s because something comes across, like artistic inspiration, that hits you just right…that certain slant of light. This was that for me as lilting lines about us all being aware of the fragile beauty of this transitory life kicked in with delicately cared for falsetto harmonies and melodies cradled as gently as the ideas being conveyed. Ryan Gall met up with the boys (and Pebbles) at the Vagrant offices to capture this gem which I’m single-handedly driving the play count up on, thank you to Fossil Collective for this and to Vagrant for having us over, wonderful. — Anna
