Sources from Tibet say the popular Tibetan singer Gebey (sometimes spelled Gepe, Gebe, or Gaybay) has been arrested following a cultural awareness performance at a concert hall in the Aba Tibetan Prefecture.
The 27-year- old Tibetan singer was apparently arrested Saturday, May 24, 2014 by Chinese security forces after the concert where Gebey performed songs off his 2012 album which spoke to the need to preserve Tibetan language and culture.

Gebey is one of at least 11 Tibetan musicians who have been arrested by the Chinese authorities since 2012 for writing and performing songs that assert Tibetan national and cultural identity and challenge Communist Party rule in Tibet.
The songs give voice to the Tibetan outcry regarding China’s policies of ethnic stifling, occupation and political control over Tibet. Since 2011 there have been 125 self-immolations by Tibetans in protest of China’s policies.
There has been no comment from Chinese police or authorities and sources say his family has been allowed no contact or information.
