SoKo has been involved in The Voice Project from the start, she was kind enough to DJ the Voice Project/Ed Sharpe record release party with Devendra Banhart, Ana Calderon and me where we raised money to start the ladies’ farm in Gulu. It’s such a natural fit as SoKo’s music has always seemed to be such an open an honest communication, in a way reminding us that strength and courage isn’t the absence of fear or pain or human frailty, that it is one that begets the other, and this song a great example. It’s something I was thinking about in the context of the ladies in Gulu, how many times they must have been hurt or afraid, but still have had the strength to do what they’ve done. True courage.
