“Let’s just do it in my bedroom guys…” We feel lucky that so many great people are not just willing to use their voices on this, but welcoming our cameras and this cause into their homes, studios and private spaces. That was a theme we wanted to explore with the project, the idea of “home.” To be caught out in that no man’s land, between a war you didn’t want to fight and the home you feel you can’t go back to, it’s a gift of such empathy and kindness that the women and the people of Northern Uganda would use their voices and songs to carry a message to those who have fought that they still have a home, that they still have a place in this world and people who care for them. Home comes in all shapes and sizes, and it’s often as much about the people you love as the place you remember, so that was the other concept; having people pass the message to those they love…the power of friendship in this life…the smiles, the little jokes, the small kindnesses. Nicole’s love for her friends The Avett Brothers came through in the knowing smile when she first told us she wanted to cover them, the same smile when she sings this.
