We were introduced to Ben through our good friend Bob Ferguson over at Oxfam America. Ben’s a very vocal activist and has been a passionate supporter of Oxfam’s work. In 2009 he toured with the Vienna Teng Trio (we shot the Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale episode at Vienna’s place when they were crashing there while passing through NYC on tour). As we chatted about his song selection, Ben mentioned that he was really excited to do this song in part because it was from a woman’s perspective and the whole idea of really stepping into someone else’s shoes. It’s a great point, not just for cover songs, and something we could all probably benefit from doing more of. We shot this the afternoon before Ben’s NYC show (that Joan was coming to) and you can see the humility and appreciation for her style shining through.
