I tried to find the place in Williamsburg for ages as I had gotten the wrong address, which was actually a construction site, and by the third time I passed the builders were my new friends trying to point me in the right direction. I finally got to this amazing studio/office space where her boyfriend and some of his friends shared this amazing large loft. It had this massive backdrop on one wall of a wood scene that had lights behind it so you actually almost felt like you were in a beautiful woodland scene. And then Leah quietly sat down for this performance. To say “soulful” seems trite, over used, but “soulful” just has to be said here. And “heartbreakingly beautiful” as well. Leah takes The Low Anthem’s intimate and ethereal lament on the plight of the reckless dreamers and refugees from a world decaying in the hands of the lords of war and those trading on children’s promise, so beautifully layered with swirling harmonies, and makes it even more personal…completely personal. Her voice seems to sing as soul who has exactly known the struggle, which makes the soaring sound waves of the first chorus seem to skip the ears and directly enter the chest when they rise above the verses to become something more, something extraordinary and divine for all of us spooning water from the broken vessels. — Anna
