From Resolve:
October 22, 2010
30 days.
30 days before President Obama is required to release the first ever U.S. strategy to help permanently end LRA violence. That means we have 30 days to convey what’s really at stake as the Obama Administration readies its response to Congress and the people of central Africa.
Here’s the deal: the more eyes that are fixed on that strategy—from Americans across the country and our Members of Congress—the greater the chances that President Obama will provide the leadership and commitment needed to finally see this crisis ended.
But the President needs to know that we are watching. He needs to know that while the families being attacked by the LRA live in remote, marginalized areas, and while they may lack the political and economic currency that often buys our nation’s traditional interests, we speak of other interests. We speak of a fundamental interest in protecting the basic humans rights of our neighbors in central Africa.
The President needs to know that we will not stop until this crisis ends.
We’re on the right track. Over 2,000 of you have pledged to read the President’s LRA strategy when it is released and now, Members of Congress are beginning to follow your lead by making their own public commitment to read the President’s strategy and support the kind of investments needed to effectively protect civilians in LRA affected areas and bring Joseph Kony to justice.
Moreover, Resolve was recently contacted by the office of one of our Congressional champions, who specifically asked us to re-mobilize the young people of America, saying, “We need the grassroots effort to get this off of high center. With enough pressure, the President [can] help the people who have suffered under the fist of Joseph Kony. We can’t do it without your help.”
Bottom line: your voices are powerful and crucial. Together, we passed the most widely-cosponsored legislation on an African issue in history, and we did it in the span of a year. But that year will have come to naught if we don’t put sustained pressure on Congress and the President to follow through on their promises.
The Goal: 10,000 Americans. 100 Members of Congress.
We have 30 days, folks. By the end of these 30 days, we want to have 10,000 Americans across the country and 100 Members of Congress committed to read the President’s strategy. It’s a big task, but if I’m not mistaken, we have a pretty good track record with achieving the seemingly impossible.
We’ll need your help. Blast this goal across your social sphere. Use every medium at hand— from Twitter, to a personal email, to a phone call, to a handwritten letter, to smoke signals, to Facebook, to carrier pigeons— we need it all. We need you to spread the word quickly and relentlessly.
And most of all, we need you to make your own personal pledge to President Obama.
PLEDGE HERE.
