I was introduced to Paddy Boom years ago (aka Patrick Seacor…aka Spike) at a friend’s house one lazy summer that of those lazy summers from when you’re younger that stay in your mind as a series of sun-filled snapshots. The main memory I had was sitting around a beach campfire with him playing a piece of drift wood for whatever song we were trying to sing, completely holding it down with just his hands and something he found to bang on. I remember thinking there really are some amazingly talented people you get to run across in this life. And I remembered him talking about his band Faith, and this woman Felice with such a powerful voice that he was playing with.
Years went by and next thing you know, he’s the drummer for The Scissor Sisters. We had just gotten back in touch as we were getting ready for the Voice Project benefit in NY this year, Spike had just moved back and Felice was in town too, so it seemed like a great chance to get them together to do a song. Felice is lovely, powerful and humble…we asked if they would kick things off for us that night and as we were getting folks to quiet down in the back room at SPiN NYC she said not too worry too much, early on in her career she had started singing down in the subways and that had helped her train her voice to make it carry. She exudes a fierce warmth, if that makes any sense, and the two of them together have a dynamic that’s very tender and special, the kind that seems to only come from long friendships and creative partnerships. Many thanks to Paddy and Felice for kicking things off in a great way at the benefit with version of Bing Ji Ling’s “Sunshine Love.” — Hunter
