Last month, we covered the story of the many artists who are facing beatings, arrest, and political repression in Belarus, the country that carries the unfortunate title of Europe’s last dictatorship. One featured group of artists, the Belarus Free Theatre, are now making waves across the United States, bringing a vision of the oppression artists face into the mainstream.
Tonight on HBO, the Theatre’s documentary Dangerous Acts Starring The Unstable Elements of Belarus is scheduled to air at 9pm Eastern Time. The film consists of footage smuggled out of Aleksandr Lukashenko’s dictatorship, and firsthand accounts of the violence with which the government responds in a land where art is a crime.
