This one was actually on Halloween, Rachel was playing that night at Joe’s Pub (not far from my place so easy to get to) and turns out neither Rachel nor I had figured out Halloween costumes so ran out after the shoot to find a last minute one. We shot it in a backstage dressing room at Joe’s Pub where she and Caleb were rehearsing for the show. Rachel is managed by Steve Smith over at A², same folks as Brandi, and Rachel being a big fan of hers really wanted to do this one for the project. Rachel’s enthusiasm and love for the song and what it means to her contagious on this- there’s simply is no substitute for artists picking a song that has been a meaningful part of their life.
Rachel and Caleb just have that easy synchronicity that can come from touring together and fall into it as soon as the music starts. It was beautiful to watch them communicate through this song, it’s all there in the body language, the faces, the harmonies, the timings and tones. And something else came to mind, watching the pair made me think a bit about all different kinds of relationships and friendships out there. There are so many kinds but the one thing they all share, from family, to friends, to work buddies and lovers, is that it’s not about being in unison, perfect duplicates, it’s about being in harmony, independent forms in synch, sometimes quite different but sharing something. It’s what creates so much beauty in music and in life in general. That we as humans can come together and be in synch like that from time to time, it’s one of the most beautiful things we get to do with our time here on earth and the more we do it the better we, and this planet, can be. It is music that so often, so wonderfully, gives us that opportunity; a beat to move to, a feeling to share. Anyway, that’s what came to mind watching this…that and wondering how Caleb can so effortlessly sneaks all those lovely harmonics into his strumming. Thanks to Rachel and Caleb, to Steve and the good people at Joe’s Pub. — Anna
