Taking the baton from Deer Tick’s John McCauley who had done “L.I.E.” for us just a week before backstage at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Keith and Jo decided to pass it to their friend, NYC based Cameron Hull with this version of his “I Wish So Bad.” They invited us up to their practice space, a church in Flushing, NY (Jo said she’s been playing organ on Sundays so they’re allowed to practice in there during the week…pretty great acoustics). We loved the choice of song, the poignant lyrics of love and regret mixed in that way can be so hard to untangle in this life, the kind of lyrics that stay with you.

1/29/11 these posts were up at two blogs we like the day after this went live:

I try not to post too many videos at a time on here, but I really need you all to watch this one. Another great session from The Voice Project of The Shivers covering Cameron Hull. I’ve been a huge fan of The Shivers ever since my friend Kenny showed them to me, and we’ll both agree that they are the most underrated band out there. It’s a strange thing to claim a band as underrated, like a back handed compliment. Let’s clarify that I think this band is unrivaled, they exist in their own realm, they are supernatural. The way I feel when I listen to their music is comparable to nothing short of a holy thing, something that only happens when music is properly digested as it should be. It’s a certain truth that is only revealed through specific chords, and words. The church’s acoustics become sacred ground for reasons beyond church pews and holy water. It is a few brief minutes of relief, and observance. Listen on. — FRIENDS WITH BOTH ARMS

I find these very uplifting, as, taking The Shivers (above) for example, the performers clearly love the song they’ve chosen and their interpretation is uniquely special. Their love means they take an ownership of the song giving these candid films a special moment capturing the passion and emotion as they pour out their spirit…. Wonderful! — the banksy boy brief
